Read below my HONOST review for Surfshark.
Today I give you a 100% honost review of Surfshark. In this review I go in depth about multiple key features that a VPN must have.

Hii How are you doing? My name is JP and your #1 source of VPN reviews, courses and discounts. Watch the Youtube video if you don't want to read the whole review(coming soon).

If you are left with the question: "Why should I even use a VPN?" or "What is a VPN?". Check my page where I explain what a VPN is and why you should use it. Okay that's enough talk lets go the Surfshark review

First impression

Okay, I went to the Surfshark website. My first impression of the website was that it had a trusted appearance. The website has a original design and not a standard VPN website design. The top bar(top of the website) gives your status and IP.

If we look further we can see some features of Surfshark which includes the key feature of a VPN: Protection and Privacy.
On the website we can check how many servers Surfshark has. If we take a quick look at the server page we can see there are 1040 servers in 61+ different country's.

On the bottom of the website there are tips and tricks for using an VPN. Tricks from how to spot fake VPNs to the best Christmas movies on Netflix. By the payment section you can choose from Paypal, Google Pay, Creditcard, IDEAL, Sofort and for the one who wants to be complete anonymous Cryptocurrency.

Just like ExpressVPN Surfshark has a couple of builded in tools in there website for testing your security. DNS leaking test, What is my IP?, webRTC leak test.

Your router communicateds between your devices and the rest of the Internet. To communicate a router needs something called a port. A router has around 60.000 ports. The first 1000 ports are dedicated ports for specific functions. The other ports can you assign for whatever you want.

Port forwarding is when you open a port for a specific task where data can traffel through. Port forwarding is usually used by gamers, accessing your pc outside of the LAN or software that needs something different then the dedicated ports. Most of the modern routers support port forwarding.

Port forwarding is supported by Surfshark. That Surfshark supports port forwarding makes the VPN service a great VPN for gamers and people who want to access there pc inside a WLAN.

logs Surfshark has a NO-LOGS-POLICY

If you are on the Internet and you are searching for example YouTube on Google. Your ISP(Internet Service Provider) keeps track of all your data(the website you've visited, IP4, etc).
Your ISP can sell this information to advertisers, the government or other third parties. The main goal of a VPN is privacy and anonymity. But what sense does it make if the VPN company keeps logs about you and your online activity. It makes no senses.
That's why Surfshark has a NO-LOGS-POLICY.

Surfshark has in there NO-LOGS-POLICY a couple of frequently asked questions. The important answers and question you can find below.

  • What information is collected? User’s e-mail address and encrypted password. Basic billing information and order history. Surfshark does collect diagnostic information like monitor crashes on there apps.
  • What information do we share with third parties? Surfshark claimes that they don't have much information to share with third parties. Even so, Surfshark don't disclose or sell/trade any information to third parties unless there are forced to by a court.
By the footer page there is a Warrant Canary section.
From the Surfshark Warren Canary: "We, Surfshark, are committed to be transparent and take full control of our service. Private information of our users has never been disclosed or seized, nor have we been compromised or suffered a data breach.".

Surfshark has
  • 0 National Security letters.
  • 0 Gag orders.
  • 0 Warrants from a government organization.

Now let's talk about streaming. Streaming is a important feature for a VPN. The problem is often that when you watch Netflix or a YouTube video that the video needs to buffer most of the time. This is because there is not enough bandwidth. Your ISP can cause this issue for multiple reasons. It can be rushhour or your ISP want you to switch to the competitor of the site you are visiting. You are more waiting for the buffering to finish then you are watching a video. You don't want that don't you?

Surfshark has you covered. Okay that's enough talk. Let's go to results. I will talk in depth about the performance in form of Mbps in the section 'Performance'.

Without Surfshark turned on I never have trouble with watching YouTube video's or Netflix video's. Now I turned on Surfshark. First I tried watching a YouTube video. The video is buffering for a couple of seconds in the beginning. But further I watched the video without problems. The buffering took around 4-7 seconds. Then I went to the heavier work Netflix. I watched the movie 'Jumanji'. Here again the video buffered in the beginning but I never had any trouble. The buffering took around 14 seconds.

Surfshark is compatible on Windows, macOS, IOS, Android, Linux and many more. I listed below a small piece of the compatible devices and OS. You can find here a complete list of compatible devices and OS of Surfshark. On the tutorial page you can find tutorials on how to setup Surfshark on your device. In general I think it is very easy to setup Surfshark on a device. It can be tricky setup Surfshark on your router but I talk later in this review about router setup.

A small piece of all the compatible devices from Surfshark. Check here all the compatible devices
Surfshark is not only compatible with the default OS and devices. Surfshark is compatible with smart TV, game console's and Trust DNS.

Surfshark windows client software How the interface of Surfshark looks like

User interface
When I finished to setup my Surfshark client I started the software. It . The software is comparing to other VPNs versatile. As you can see in the picture's there is a big green button with 'connect'. On the right top we can find all our settings and servers.
Surfshark has also the options the connect to a double VPN(Multihop) and P2P. These options are additional options for more security and privacy.

  • Double VPN
  • In stead of using one server you are now using 2 servers. That means that your traffic will be encrypted twice. Surfshark called this multihop and. You can find multihop by the server settings.

  • P2P
  • P2P means Peer-to-Peer. P2P is a network where all computers are equivalent. The server on Surfshark is compatible with P2P. You find the P2P by the server settings

In the settings you can change the protocols TCP or UDP.

With Surfshark you can protect unlimited devices. So you can protect all your devices but why not setup Surfshark on your router? Fortunate you can setup a VPN on a router. You can see your router as a middle men between your devices and the Internet. All the data(email, Google search) go through your router. If we protected the router then we protect all the devices that are connected to that same router.

For someone who isn't experienced with Router setup it can be difficult to setup OpenVPN. You can find a detailed explanation on my page How to setup a VPN on a router?. Most of the routers that are compatible with Surfshark are ASUS and TP-link routers.

Performance is important because you don't want to slow down your Internet. Before I connected to Surfshark I test my performance. I am wireless connected and I used speedtest for testing my Internet speed.
My download speed was on average 42.89 Mbps and my upload speed was on average 25.09 Mbps.
Now I turned on Surfshark and I did the same test.
The result were average download speed 36.39 Mbps and the average upload speed 22.31 Mbps.

ConnectedDownload speedUpload SpeedPing
Not connected 42.89Mbps 25.09Mbps 16ms
Speed test 36.89Mbps 22.31Mpbs 29ms

Kill switch

With a kill switch a VPN is much safer. Surfshark has a builded in kill switch. But what is a kill switch? A kill switch is a last safety measure. As you know a VPN encrypt your Internet traffic. But what if the VPN stopped for some reason(unstable Internet connection, firewalls blocks Surfshark)? Then comes the kill switch in action. When the VPN 'tunnel' falls away the kill switch blocks all your internet traffic until the 'tunnel' is restored. A kill switch doesn't influence the permance.

The rule in general is always turn on your kill switch. If you deal with sensitive information for your work turning on the kill switch is a MUST. But even if you don't deal with delicate information it is important to turn on your kill switch.

I have my kill switch always turned on because it doesn't reduce my performance. It is just a additional safety measure. You can turn the kill switch on/off in the settings.

Surfshark kill switch We can find the kill switch by the general options

Surfshark has their own DNS server to prevent DNS leaking. DNS is a network protocol that converts IP adresses to domain name's. DNS leaking is a security flaw that allows a DNS request to be revealed to your ISP DSN servers. Despite using a VPN. That's sounds pretty crazy right?

Surfshark uses a 256bit encryption on there DNS servers. You can test on dns leak test if your VPN is leaking. It is probably a good idiee to test your VPN no mather what all reviews or people say.

Support/Money back guerentee

If you have bought Surfshark and you are for some reason dissatisfied Surfshark offers a 30 day money back.
It is very straightfrowarded to cancel your subscription. Log in to your Surfshark account.
Find the button 'stop renewal account'. Now is your subscription stopted.
For the refund you need to contact the support team through email or chat. It usually takes a couple business days to process your refund.

You can contact Surfshark by email or a more direct way by chatting with a Surfshark agent. I tested both methods. With the chat I had a reaction within minutes. Contacting Surfshark by email took a couple of workdays before I had a answer. The asnwer was in both contact methods clear and helpfull. My preference is the chat because you have your answer the same day. Surfshark has a FAQ here you can find the Frequently Asked Questions and the aswers. Before contacting Surfshark I recommend searching the FAQ through. There is some usefull information in it.
