First impression

Okay, I went to the purevpn website. The site has a nice design and layout. On the home page we can see the discounts that purevpn offers.

If we look further we can see some features of purevpn which includes the key feature of a VPN: Protection and Privacy.
On the website we can check how many servers purevpn has. If we take a quick look at the server page we can see there are 2000 servers in 180 different country's with over 300.000 IPs.

On the website we can check on what platforms purevpn is available. Here you can download the software. The page automatically detects your platform. But in case that you want to download for an other platform there is at the bottom of the download page all the available platforms.
By the payment section you can choose from PayPal, Alipay, Creditcard, Paymentwall, BlueSnap and for the one who wants to be complete anonymous Cryptocurrency.

Purevpn has builded in tools in there website like

Your router communicateds between your devices and the rest of the Internet. To communicate a router needs something called a port. A router has around 60.000 ports. The first 1000 ports are dedicated ports for specific functions. The other ports can you assign for whatever you want.

Port forwarding is when you open a port for a specific task where data can traffel through. Port forwarding is usually used by gamers, accessing your pc outside of the LAN or software that needs something different then the dedicated ports. Most of the modern routers support port forwarding.

Purevpn support port forwarding. Purevpn supporting port forwarding is a great benefit. Other big VPNs like NordVPN and ExpressVPN doesn't offer port forwarding.

logs purevpn has a NO-LOGS-POLICY

If you are on the Internet and you are searching for example YouTube on Google. Your ISP(Internet Service Provider) keeps track of all your data(the website you've visited, IP4, etc).
Your ISP can sell this information to advertisers, the government or other third parties. The main goal of a VPN is privacy and anonymity. But what sense does it make if the VPN company keeps logs about you and your online activity. It makes no senses.
That's why purevpn has a NO-LOGS-POLICY. However purevpn has a history with NO-LOGS-POLICY's.

From the purevpn privacy policy

  • “Our servers automatically record the time at which you connect to any of our servers. From here on forward, we do not keep any records of anything that could associate any specific activity to a specific user. The time when a successful connection is made with our servers is counted as a ‘connection’ and the total bandwidth used during this connection is called ‘bandwidth’. Connection and bandwidth are kept in record to maintain the quality of our service. This helps us understand the flow of traffic to specific servers so we could optimize them better.”

The story involves a cyber criminal in the USA named Ryan Lin. This gentleman has been accused of cyberbulling, harrasing and hacking. The local law inforcement couldn't catch a break in the case of Ryan Lin. The reason was that Ryan Lin used a combination of privacy tools. One of these privacy tools was purevpn.

The local police passed the case to the FBI. The FBI had discovered a pc that was used by Ryan Lin. From there the FBI had found out on the pc that Ryan Lin used purevpn.
The FBI went to purevpn for help. If we read the privacy policy(above) we can assume this is where the story ends.

Ryan Linn was captured by the FBI. So how does this happen? Well purevpn logs certain details. From these logs the FBI could tell which gmail account Ryan Linn has logged in and which Rover.com account Ryan Linn has used. Purevpn could assign these gmail and rover accounts to Ryan Linn real IP address.

This case proves that you just need to trust your VPN service. If the vpn service says they doesn't keep any log record you can't check. But story's like this gives a VPN service a bad reputation.

Now let's talk about streaming. Streaming is a important feature for a VPN. The problem is often that when you watch Netflix or a YouTube video that the video needs to buffer most of the time. This is because there is not enough bandwidth. Your ISP can cause this issue for multiple reasons. It can be rushhour or your ISP want you to switch to the competitor of the site you are visiting. You are more waiting for the buffering to finish then you are watching a video. You don't want that don't you?

purevpn promises a couple of things. Okay that's enough talk. Let's go to the features. I will talk in depth about the performance in form of Mbps in the section 'Performance'.

As I said before purevpn promises a couple of things about streaming.

  • Unlimited Band: Purevpn gives just like any other paid vpn unlimited bandwidth.
  • Acces any channel: If a certain channel is not available in your country. Purevpn makes it possible to make it available.
  • Stay anonymous: While you are streaming you can stay anonymous.
  • Stream buffer free: Purevpn promises that you can watch video's buffer free.
  • Ad-blocker: Purevpn removes all the ads on server level. This means that you never have to watch an ad again.
  • Web filter: Filter all the website out that you don't want to visited or your kids want to see inappropriate website's.
  • App filter: All the apps that are running in the background and consuming bandwidth will be shutdown with this function.

purevpn is compatible on Windows, macOS, IOS, Android, Linux, Google, Firestore, Rasberry even a blackberry and many more. I listed below a small piece of the compatible devices and OS. You can find here a complete list of compatible devices and OS of purevpn. On the tutorial page you can find tutorials on how to setup purevpn on your device. In general I think it is very easy to setup purevpn on a device. It can be tricky setup purevpn on your router but I talk later in this review about router setup.

purevpn is also compatible on game console and other IOT devices.

A small piece of all the compatible devices from purevpn. Check here all the compatible devices

User interface
When I finished to setup my purevpn client I started the software. It took a couple of seconds before the software was started. When I was logged in it was very clear for me how to start the VPN. As you can see in the picture's we can choose an country from the dashboard. On the dashboard of we can find all the servers.
Purevpn has also the options in the interface personalized selection, split tunneling, settings and account/billing. These options are all additional options for more security.

  • Split tunneling
  • Split tunneling allows you to choose which program or website is secured by a VPN. The benefit of split tunneling is that we don't loose any unnecessary bandwidth.

  • White listing
  • White listing allows you to control your IP address. Not only can you control your IP but white listing is a additional security measure.

  • P2P
  • P2P means Peer-to-Peer. P2P is a network where all computers are equivalent. The server on purevpn is compatible with P2P.

  • Dedicated IP
  • Dedicated IP is a IP that only you will be using. You can purchase this additional option for 1 month($12.94), 1 year($7.80 per month) and 3 years($3.91 per month). The dedicated servers are in United States, Germany, United Kingdom, Netherlands and France.

In the settings you can change the protocols TCP or UDP, find your account information, your DNS settings and more.

purevpn windows client software How the interface of purevpn looks like

With purevpn you can protect up to 5 devices with 1 account. Most of the family's has at least 6 devices connected to the internet. Fortunate you can setup a VPN on a router. You can see your router as a middle men between your devices and the Internet. All the data(email, Google search) go through your router. If we protected the router then we protect all the devices that are connected to that same router.

For someone who isn't experienced with Router setup it can be difficult to setup OpenVPN. You can find a detailed explanation on my page How to setup a VPN on a router?. Most of the routers that are compatible with purevpn are ASUS, TP-link, Tomato, Linksys, Netgear and many more routers.

Performance is important because you don't want to slow down your Internet. Before I connected to purevpn I test my performance. I am wireless connected and I used speedtest for testing my Internet speed.
My download speed was on average 43.15 Mbps and my upload speed was on average 25.89 Mbps.
Now I turned on purevpn and I did the same test.
The result were average download speed 35.86 Mbps and the average upload speed 22.53 Mbps.

ConnectedDownload speedUpload SpeedPing
Not connected 43.15Mbps 25.89Mbps 19ms
Speed test 35.86Mbps 22.53Mpbs 28ms

Kill switch

With a kill switch a VPN is much safer. purevpn has a builded in kill switch. But what is a kill switch? A kill switch is a last safety measure. As you know a VPN encrypt your Internet traffic. But what if the VPN stopped for some reason(unstable Internet connection, firewalls blocks purevpn)? Then comes the kill switch in action. When the VPN 'tunnel' falls away the kill switch blocks all your internet traffic until the 'tunnel' is restored. A kill switch doesn't influence the permance.

The rule in general is always turn on your kill switch. If you deal with sensitive information for your work turning on the kill switch is a MUST. But even if you don't deal with delicate information it is important to turn on your kill switch.

I have my kill switch always turned on because it doesn't reduce my performance. It is just a additional safety measure. You can turn the kill switch on/off in the settings.

purevpn setting We can find the kill switch by the general options

purevpn has their own DNS server to prevent DNS leaking. DNS is a network protocol that converts IP adresses to domain name's. DNS leaking is a security flaw that allows a DNS request to be revealed to your ISP DSN servers. Despite using a VPN. That's sounds pretty crazy right?

purevpn uses a AES 256bit encryption on there DNS servers. You can test on dns leak test if your VPN is leaking. It is probably a good idiee to test your VPN no mather what all reviews or people say.

Support/Money back guerentee

If you have bought purevpn and you are for some reason dissatisfied purevpn offers a 31 day money back. The only thing purevpn can't refund is purchases from the Apple store. You need to contact the App store support for an refund from the Apple store.
It is very straightfrowarded to cancel your subscription. Log in to your purevpn account.
Scroll to the bottom of the page and click 'cancel automatic payments'.
For the refund you need to contact the support team through email or chat. It usually takes 1 or 2 business days to process your refund.

You can contact purevpn by email or a more direct way by chatting with a purevpn agent. I tested both methods. With the chat I had a reaction within a couple of minutes. Contacting purevpn by email took a couple of workdays before I had a answer. The asnwer was in both contact methods clear and helpfull. My preference is the chat because you have your answer the same day. purevpn has a FAQ here you can find the Frequently Asked Questions and the aswers. Before contacting purevpn I recommend searching the FAQ through. In the FAQ of purevpn is usefull information and guide on how to setup purevpn. But not only to setup purevpn also how to setup your DNS servers, routers, split tunneling and more.
