If you are left with the question: "Why should I even use a VPN?" or "What is a VPN?". Check my page where I explain what a VPN is and why you should use it. Okay that's enough talk lets go the NordVPN review

First impression

Okay, I went to the NordVPN website. My first impression of the website was pretty good. The website has a nice reliable blue design. The top bar(top of the website) gives your status and IP.

If we look further we can see some features of NordVPN which includes the key feature of a VPN: Protection and Privacy.
On the website we can check how many servers NordVPN has. If we take a quick look at the server page we can see there are 5622 servers in 60 different country's.

On the website we can check on what platforms NordVPN is available. Here you can download the software. The page automatically detects your platform. But in case that you want to download for an other platform there is at the bottom of the download page all the available platforms. By the payment section you can choose from AliPay, Amazon, Creditcard and for the one who wants to be complete anonymous Cryptocurrency.
NordVPN is choosen to be #1 VPN of 2019

Your router communicateds between your devices and the rest of the Internet. To communicate a router needs something called a port. A router has around 60.000 ports. The first 1000 ports are dedicated ports for specific functions. The other ports can you assign for whatever you want.

Port forwarding is when you open a port for a specific task where data can traffel through. Port forwarding is usually used by gamers, accessing your pc outside of the LAN or software that needs something different then the dedicated ports. Most of the modern routers support port forwarding.

Unfortunately NordVPN doesn't support port forwarding. As we mentioned above port forwarding is typically used by gamers. If you aren't a gamer then you probably don't need port forwarding.

logs NordVPN has a NO-LOGS-POLICY

If you are on the Internet and you are searching for example YouTube on Google. Your ISP(Internet Service Provider) keeps track of all your data(the website you've visited, IP4, etc).
Your ISP can sell this information to advertisers, the government or other third parties. The main goal of a VPN is privacy and anonymity. But what sense does it make if the VPN company keeps logs about you and your online activity. It makes no senses.
That's why NordVPN has a NO-LOGS-POLICY.

As NordVPN claims in there NO-LOGS-POLICY: "NordVPN doesn't collect, track or share your data". Nord VPN keeps it at the need to know.
NordVPN says: "NordVPN knows about you just enough to deliver the service you expect – and not a digit more.".
When you are connected to NordVPN and you go again to YouTube your VPN and ISP can't log your data.

Here are four things you should consider when it comes to logs policy.

  • Which kind of data does the VPN provider collect about there users and the Internet activity.
  • The extern tracking tools that are used.
  • In which country is provider settled and what are the laws of that country about collecting user data.
  • How can I pay and what pesonal data does the provider need.
At the bottom page of the About page there is a Warrant Canary section.
From the NordVPN Warren Canary: "We, NordVPN, confirm that we take full control of our infrastructure. It has never been compromised or suffered a data breach. We have not disclosed any private keys or any information of our users, and we have not been forced to modify our system to allow access or data leakage to a third party of any kind".

Now let's talk about streaming. Streaming is a important feature for a VPN. The problem is often that when you watch Netflix or a YouTube video that the video needs to buffer most of the time. This is because there is not enough bandwidth. Your ISP can cause this issue for multiple reasons. It can be rushhour or your ISP want you to switch to the competitor of the site you are visiting. You are more waiting for the buffering to finish then you are watching a video. You don't want that don't you?

NordVPN has you covered. Okay that's enough talk. Let's go to results. I will talk in depth about the performance in form of Mbps in the section 'Performance'.

Without NordVPN turned on I never have trouble with watching YouTube video's or Netflix video's. Now I turned on NordVPN. First I tried watching a YouTube video. The video is buffering for a couple of seconds in the beginning. But further I watched the video without problems. The buffering took around 3-5 seconds. Then I went to the heavier work Netflix. I watched the movie 'coming to America'. Here again the video buffered in the beginning but I never had any trouble. The buffering took around 11 seconds.

NordVPN is compatible on Windows, macOS, IOS, Android, Linux, Google, Firestore, Rasberry even a blackberry and many more. I listed below a small piece of the compatible devices and OS. You can find here a complete list of compatible devices and OS of NordVPN. On the tutorial page you can find tutorials on how to setup NordVPN on your device. In general I think it is very easy to setup NordVPN on a device. It can be tricky setup NordVPN on your router but I talk later in this review about router setup.

NordVPN windows client software How the interface of NordVPN looks like

User interface
When I finished to setup my NordVPN client I started the software. It took a couple of seconds before the software was started. When I was logged in it was very clear for me how to start the VPN. As you can see in the picture's there is a button with 'quick connect'. On the left side of we can find all the servers.
NordVPN has also the options the connect to a double VPN, Onion VPN, P2P and a dedicated IP. These options are all additional options for more security.

  • Double VPN
  • In stead of using one server you are now using 2 servers. That means that your traffic will be encrypted twice.

  • Onion VPN
  • The Onion VPN option sends your traffic through the NordVPN server and the through the Onion network. The (Tor)Onion network is a network where traffic repeatably will be encrypted before it reached his end destination.

  • P2P
  • P2P means Peer-to-Peer. P2P is a network where all computers are equivalent. The server on NordVPN is compatible with P2P.

  • Dedicated IP
  • Dedicated IP is a IP that only you will be using. You can purchase this additional option for $70 per year. The dedicated servers are in United States, Germany, United Kingdom, Netherlands, France.

In the settings you can change the protocols TCP or UDP.

NordVPN software Here I have turned on the option obfuscated servers.

With NordVPN you can protect up to 6 devices with 1 account. Most of the family's has at least 6 devices connected to the internet. Fortunate you can setup a VPN on a router. You can see your router as a middle men between your devices and the Internet. All the data(email, Google search) go through your router. If we protected the router then we protect all the devices that are connected to that same router.

For someone who isn't experienced with Router setup it can be difficult to setup OpenVPN. You can find a detailed explanation on my page How to setup a VPN on a router?. Most of the routers that are compatible with NordVPN are ASUS and TP-link routers.

Performance is important because you don't want to slow down your Internet. Before I connected to NordVPN I test my performance. I am wireless connected and I used speedtest for testing my Internet speed.
My download speed was on average 43.15 Mbps and my upload speed was on average 25.89 Mbps.
Now I turned on NordVPN and I did the same test.
The result were average download speed 38.24 Mbps and the average upload speed 24.78 Mbps. NordVPN claims in there FAQ that you will lose up to 30% of you bandwidth I didn't experienced 30%. If we calculate in % the bandwidth we lost about 10%.

ConnectedDownload speedUpload SpeedPing
Not connected 43.15Mbps 25.89Mbps 19ms
Speed test 38.24Mbps 24.78Mpbs 28ms

Kill switch

With a kill switch a VPN is much safer. NordVPN has a builded in kill switch. But what is a kill switch? A kill switch is a last safety measure. As you know a VPN encrypt your Internet traffic. But what if the VPN stopped for some reason(unstable Internet connection, firewalls blocks NordVPN)? Then comes the kill switch in action. When the VPN 'tunnel' falls away the kill switch blocks all your internet traffic until the 'tunnel' is restored. A kill switch doesn't influence the permance.

The rule in general is always turn on your kill switch. If you deal with sensitive information for your work turning on the kill switch is a MUST. But even if you don't deal with delicate information it is important to turn on your kill switch.

I have my kill switch always turned on because it doesn't reduce my performance. It is just a additional safety measure. You can turn the kill switch on/off in the settings.

NordVPN kill switch We can find the kill switch by the general options

NordVPN has their own DNS server to prevent DNS leaking. DNS is a network protocol that converts IP adresses to domain name's. DNS leaking is a security flaw that allows a DNS request to be revealed to your ISP DSN servers. Despite using a VPN. That's sounds pretty crazy right?

NordVPN uses a 256bit encryption on there DNS servers. You can test on dns leak test if your VPN is leaking. It is probably a good idiee to test your VPN no mather what all reviews or people say.

Support/Money back guerentee

If you have bought NordVPN and you are for some reason dissatisfied NordVPN offers a 30 day money back. The only thing NordVPN can't refund is purchases from the Apple store. You need to contact the App store support for an refund from the Apple store.
It is very straightfrowarded to cancel your subscription. Log in to your NordVPN account.
Scroll to the bottom of the page and click 'cancel automatic payments'.
For the refund you need to contact the support team through email or chat. It usually takes 1 or 2 business days to process your refund.

You can contact NordVPN by email or a more direct way by chatting with a NordVPN agent. I tested both methods. With the chat I had a reaction within minutes. Contacting NordVPN by email took a couple of workdays before I had a answer. The asnwer was in both contact methods clear and helpfull. My preference is the chat because you have your answer the same day. NordVPN has a FAQ here you can find the Frequently Asked Questions and the aswers. Before contacting NordVPN I recommend searching the FAQ through. There is some usefull information in it.
