Do you want to feel safe and secure on the Internet? A VPN is for you the answer.

Read below my 100% HONOST review for HideMyAss.
In this review I go in depth about multiple key features that a VPN must have.

Hii How are you doing? My name is JP and your #1 source of VPN reviews, courses and discounts. Watch the YouTube video if you don't want to read the whole review(coming soon).

If you are left with the question: "Why should I even use a VPN?" or "What is a VPN?". Check my page where I explain what a VPN is and why you should use it. Okay that's enough talk lets go the HideMyAss review

First impression

Okay, I went to the HideMyAss website. The website of HideMyAss has a nice layout. The website has a reliable blue design. The top bar(top of the website) gives your status(if you are exposed), IP and your ISP.

HideMyAss uses the abbreviation HMA which stands for HideMyAss of course on there website. If we look further we can see some features of HideMyAss which includes the key feature of a VPN: Protection and Privacy.
On the website we can check how many servers HideMyAss has. If we take a quick look at the server page we can see there are over1000 servers on 290 different location's.

On the navbar we can find a section 'Tools' that are included in HideMyAss. The tools are Webproxy, IP check, Testing on DNS leakage and Testing on webRTC leakage

On the website we can see on what platforms HideMyAss is available. Here you can download the software for your platform. The download page automatically detects your platform. But in case that you want to download for an other platform there is at the bottom of the download page all the available platforms. By the payment section you can choose from Ideal, Paypal, Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

Your router communicateds between your devices and the rest of the Internet. To communicate a router needs something called a port. A router has around 60.000 ports. The first 1000 ports are dedicated ports for specific functions. The other ports can you assign for whatever you want.

Port forwarding is when you open a port for a specific task where data can traffel through. Port forwarding is usually used by gamers, accessing your pc outside of the LAN or software that needs something different then the dedicated ports. Most of the modern routers support port forwarding.

HideMyAss doesn't support port forwarding. As we mentioned above port forwarding is typically used by gamers. If you aren't a gamer then you probably don't need port forwarding. If you do need port forwarding take a look at Surfshark or purevpn.

logs HideMyAss has a NO-LOGS-POLICY

If you are on the Internet and you are searching for example YouTube on Google. Your ISP(Internet Service Provider) keeps track of all your data(the website you've visited, IP4, etc).
Your ISP can sell this information to advertisers, the government or other third parties. The main goal of a VPN is privacy and anonymity. But what sense does it make if the VPN company keeps logs about you and your online activity. It makes no senses.
That's why HideMyAss has a NO-LOGS-POLICY.

HideMyAss is transparant about there NO-LOG-POLICY. Every VPN service does log certain details. The details that a VPN service logs is different with every VPN service.

HideMyAss doesn't log the following:

  • Browsing history
  • The website you've visited
  • How long you're on a website.
  • DNS queries.
If we look to the NO-LOG-POLICY we can see what details HideMyAss logs. HideMyAss logs your IP address for 3 months. After the 3 months the information is gone forever. The information is a legal requirement for HideMyAss to work with the local law and government.

Now let's talk about streaming. Streaming is a important feature for a VPN. The problem is often that when you watch Netflix or a YouTube video that the video needs to buffer most of the time. This is because there is not enough bandwidth. Your ISP can cause this issue for multiple reasons. It can be rushhour or your ISP want you to switch to the competitor of the site you are visiting. You are more waiting for the buffering to finish then you are watching a video. You don't want that don't you?

HideMyAss has you covered. Okay that's enough talk. Let's go to results. I will talk in depth about the performance in form of Mbps in the section 'Performance'.

Without HideMyAss turned on I never have trouble with watching YouTube video's or Netflix video's. Now I turned on HideMyAss. First I tried watching a YouTube video. The video is buffering for a couple of seconds in the beginning. But further I watched the video without problems. The buffering took around 3-5 seconds. Then I went to the heavier work Netflix. I watched the movie 'coming to America'. Here again the video buffered in the beginning but I never had any trouble. The buffering took around 11 seconds.

HideMyAss is compatible on Windows, macOS, IOS, Android, Linux, Google, Firestore, Rasberry even a blackberry and many more. I listed below a small piece of the compatible devices and OS. You can find here a complete list of compatible devices and OS of HideMyAss.
On the tutorial page you can find tutorials on how to setup HideMyAss on your device. In general I think it is very easy to setup HideMyAss on a device. It can be tricky setup HideMyAss on your router but I talk later in this review about router setup.

A small piece of all the compatible devices from HideMyAss. Check here all the compatible devices
HideMyAss has the standard compatible devices. VPNs like NordVPN and ExpressVPN has more compatible devices and OS such as Blackberry, Rasberry, NAS and extensions for Chrome and Firefox.

HideMyAss windows client software How the interface of HideMyAss looks like

User interface
When I finished to setup my HideMyAss client I started the software. It took a couple of seconds before the software was started. When I was logged in it was very clear for me how to start the VPN. As you can see in the picture's there is a slider with 'connect'. Here we can connect to the HideMyAss VPN server and choose which server we want to connect with.
HideMyAss has also the options the connect to a IP shuffle, Split Tunneling and P2P. These options are all additional options for more security.

  • Split Tunneling
  • Split tunneling allows you to choose which program or website is secured by a VPN. The benefit of split tunneling is that we don't loose any unnecessary bandwidth.

  • IP shuffle
  • This is a feature that I haven't seen before. IP shuffle is a awesome features that 'shuffles' your IP. Every 10 minutes you get a random IP adress from the 290+ servers from HideMyAss.

  • P2P
  • P2P means Peer-to-Peer. P2P is a network where all computers are equivalent. The server on HideMyAss is compatible with P2P.

On the general tab we can find the general information from HideMyAss. If you want to find out your account settings or billing information you go to the section 'Account'. The Help & support tab gets you in contact with HideMyAss.

HideMyAss software Here is a overview of the option

With HideMyAss you can protect up to 5 devices with 1 account. Most of the family's has at least 6 devices connected to the internet. Fortunate you can setup a VPN on a router. You can see your router as a middle men between your devices and the Internet. All the data(email, Google search) go through your router. If we protected the router then we protect all the devices that are connected to that same router.

For someone who isn't experienced with Router setup it can be difficult to setup OpenVPN. You can find a detailed explanation on my page How to setup a VPN on a router?. Most of the routers that are compatible with HideMyAss are ASUS, Netgear and Linksys routers.

Performance is important because you don't want to slow down your Internet. Before I connected to HideMyAss I test my performance. I am wireless connected and I used speedtest for testing my Internet speed.
My download speed was on average 42.21 Mbps and my upload speed was on average 26.43 Mbps.
Now I turned on HideMyAss and I did the same test.
The result were average download speed 40.67 Mbps and the average upload speed 24.36 Mbps.

Not connected 42.21Mbps 26.43Mbps 12ms

Kill switch

With a kill switch a VPN is much safer. HideMyAss has a builded in kill switch. But what is a kill switch? A kill switch is a last safety measure. As you know a VPN encrypt your Internet traffic. But what if the VPN stopped for some reason(unstable Internet connection, firewalls blocks HideMyAss)? Then comes the kill switch in action. When the VPN 'tunnel' falls away the kill switch blocks all your internet traffic until the 'tunnel' is restored. A kill switch doesn't influence the permance.

The rule in general is always turn on your kill switch. If you deal with sensitive information for your work turning on the kill switch is a MUST. But even if you don't deal with delicate information it is important to turn on your kill switch.

I have my kill switch always turned on because it doesn't reduce my performance. It is just a additional safety measure. You can turn the kill switch on/off in the settings.

HideMyAss kill switch We can find the kill switch by the general options

HideMyAss has their own DNS server to prevent DNS leaking. DNS is a network protocol that converts IP adresses to domain name's. DNS leaking is a security flaw that allows a DNS request to be revealed to your ISP DSN servers. Despite using a VPN. That's sounds pretty crazy right?

HideMyAss uses a 256bit encryption on there DNS servers. You can test on dns leak test if your VPN is leaking. It is probably a good idiee to test your VPN no mather what all reviews or people say.

Support/Money back guerentee

If you have bought HideMyAss and you are for some reason dissatisfied HideMyAss offers a 30 day money back guerentee. However there is a catch in the 30 day money back. Here are the requirements for the 30 day money back.

  • Within 30 days
  • transfer less then 10GB on the HideMyAss network in those 30 days
  • you can't have more then 100 sessions
If you meet these requirement you are eligible for the 30 day money back. It is very straightfrowarded to cancel your subscription. Log in to your HideMyAss account.
Scroll to the bottom of the page and click 'cancel automatic payments'.
For the refund you need to contact the support team through email or chat. It usually takes 1 or 2 business days to process your refund.

You can contact HideMyAss by email or a more direct way by chatting with a HideMyAss agent. I tested both methods. With the chat I had a reaction within minutes. Contacting HideMyAss by email took a couple of workdays before I had a answer. The asnwer was in both contact methods clear and helpfull. My preference is the chat because you have your answer the same day. HideMyAss has a FAQ here you can find the Frequently Asked Questions and the aswers. Before contacting HideMyAss I recommend searching the FAQ through. There is some usefull information in it.
