Do you want to feel safe and secure on the Internet? A VPN is for you the answer.
I compared at least six VPNs from the better known such as NordVPN to HideMyAss.
Read below my HONOST review for CyberGhost.
Today I give you a 100% honost review of CyberGhost. In this review I go in depth about multiple key features that a VPN must have.

Hii How are you doing? My name is JP and your #1 source of VPN reviews, courses and discounts. Watch the Youtube video if you don't want to read the whole review(coming soon).

If you are left with the question: "Why should I even use a VPN?" or "What is a VPN?". Check my page where I explain what a VPN is and why you should use it.

First impression

Okay, I went to the CyberGhost website. My first impression of the website was normal. The website has a bold yellow'ish' design but I find that the website has a regular VPN website and there isn't much original. The topbar(top of the website) gives your status and IP.

If we look further we can see some of the features of CyberGhost which includes the key feature of a VPN: Protection and Privacy.
On the website we can check how many servers CyberGhost has. If we take a quick look at the server page we can see there are 5800 server in 90+ different country's.

On the website we can see on which platforms CyberGhost is available. Here you can download the software. The download page is split up with on the catogory's: Desktop apps, Mobile apps, Browser apps, TV apps, Routers and more. By the payment section you can choose from Creditcard and Paypal and for the one who wants to be complete anonymous Cryptocurrency.

Your router communicateds between your devices and the rest of the Internet. To communicate a router needs something called a port. A router has around 60.000 ports. The first 1000 ports are dedicated ports for specific functions. The other ports can you assign for whatever you want.

Port forwarding is when you open a port for a specific task where data can traffel through. Port forwarding is usually used by gamers, accessing your pc outside of the LAN or software that needs something different then the dedicated ports. Most of the modern routers support port forwarding.

unfortunately CyberGhost doesn't support port forwarding. As we mentioned above port forwarding is typically used by gamers or for particular software. If you aren't a gamer or using special software then you probably don't need port forwarding.

logs CyberGhost has a NO-LOGS-POLICY

If you are on the Internet. And you are searching for example Youtube on Google. Your ISP(Internet Service Provider) keeps track of all your data(the website you've visited, IP4, etc).
The ISP can sell this information to advertisers, the government or other third parties. The main goal of a VPN is privacy and anonymity. But what sense does it make if the VPN company keeps logs about you and your online activity. It makes no senses.
That's why CyberGhost has a NO-LOGS-POLICY.

As CyberGhost claims in there NO-LOGS-POLICY: "We take your privacy seriously". CyberGhost keeps it at the need to know.
CyberGhost says: "We know just the absolute minimum about you".
When we are connected to CyberGhost and we go again to Youtube our VPN and ISP can't log our data.

The co-founder of CyberGhost says: "The only way to secure your data is not to store it.".
CyberGhost does not store the following thing.

  • IP adress
  • DNS queries
  • Browsing history
  • Web content that has been accessed
  • Connection timestamps
  • Disconnection timestamps
  • Session duration
  • Bandwidth usage
  • VPN servers you connected to

CyberGhost uses a Transparency Report. The Transparency Report includes among other:
  • The number of DMCA complaints, malware activity flags and police requist
  • The key statistics of CyberGhost infrastructure
  • More about CyberGhost, Who are the people behind CyberGhost

Now lets talk about streaming. Streaming is a important feature for a VPN. The problem is often that when you watch Netflix or a Youtube video that the video needs to buffer most of the time. This is because there is not enough bandwidth. Your ISP causes this issue for multiple reasons. It can be rushhour or your ISP want you to switch to the competitor of the site you are visiting. You are more waiting for the buffering to finish then you are watching a video. You don't want that don't you?

Okay that's enough talk. Lets go to results. I will talking in depth about the performance in form of Mbps in the section 'Performance'.

Without CyberGhost turned on I never have trouble with watching Youtube video's or Netflix video's. Now I turned on CyberGhost. First I tried wathcing a Youtube video. The video is buffering for a couple of seconds in the beginning of the video but further I watched the video without problems. The buffering took around 5-8 seconds. Then I went to the heavier work Netflix. I watched the serie 'The Big Bang Theory'. Here again the video buffered in the beginnen but I never had any trouble. The buffering took around 16 seconds. But when I connected to a Asian server and tried watching a video again i got a streaming error.
When I am connected to a USA server CyberGhost has no problem playing netflix video's but other servers CyberGhost can have trouble playing the video or doesn't play the video at all and shows a proxy error.

CyberGhost is compatible with the most used devices such as Windows, macOS, Linux. I listed below a small piece of the compatible devices and OS. You can find here a complete list of compatible devices of CyberGhost. On the app page you can find tutorials on how to setup CyberGhost on your device. In general my opinion is that it is very easy to setup CyberGhost on a device.

The software of CyberGhost is Plug and play. It can be tricky setup CyberGhost on your router but I talk later in this review about router setup. If you still are confused you can check my page OpenVPN where I explain how to setup OpenVPN.

All the compatible devices and OS for CyberGhost.
In comparison with NordVPN and ExpressVPN CyberGhost has less compatible devices and OS.<>

User interface
When I finished to setup my CyberGhost client I started the software. It took a couple of seconds before the software was started. When I was logged in I was very clear for me how to start the VPN. CyberGhost interface has a button with 'VPN not connected' and below a animated slider where you can turn on the VPN. On the left side of we can find all the servers.
CyberGhost has also the options to connect to the fastest server for streaming and torrent. The only thing what these options will do is searching for the fastest server for streaming video and using torrent.

CyberGhost windows client software How the interface of CyberGhost looks like

With CyberGhost you can protect up to 7 devices with 1 account. That is more then a regular VPN. Most of the family's has at least 7 devices connected to the internet. fortunate you can setup a VPN on a router. You can see your router as a middle men between your devices and the Internet. All the data(email, Google search) go through your router. If we protected the router then we protect all the devices that are connected to that same router.

For someone who isn't experienced with Router setup it can be difficult to setup OpenVPN. You can find a detailed explanation on my page How to setup a VPN on a router?. The routers that are compatible with CyberGhost are DD-WRT routers.

CyberGhost has a very detailed tutorial on how to setup there VPN on a router. The configuration can be downloaded from your account with the options you want to include. You can find the tutorial here

VPNs are notorius for slowing down your internet connection. Lets see what CyberGhost does.
Before I connected to CyberGhost I test my performance. I am wireless connected.
My download speed was on average 43.80 Mbps and my upload speed was on average 23.83 Mbps.
Now I turned on CyberGhost and I did the same test.
The result were average download speed 35.14 Mbps and the average upload speed 24.10 Mbps. As you can see the performance did slow down a little bit.

Not connected 43.80Mbps 23.83Mbps 16ms
Speed test 35.14Mbps 20.36Mpbs 36ms

Kill switch

With a kill switch a VPN is much safer. CyberGhost has a builded in kill switch. But what is a kill switch? A kill switch is a last safety measure. As you know a VPN encrypt your Internet traffic. But what if the VPN stopped for some reason(unstable Internet connection, firewalls blocks CyberGhost)? Then comes the kill switch in action. When the VPN 'tunnel' falls away the kill switch blocks all your internet traffic until the 'tunnel' is restored. A kill switch doesn't influence the permance.

The rule in general is always turn on your kill switch. If you deal with sensitive information for your work turning on the kill switch is a MUST. But even if you don't deal with delicate information it is important to turn on your kill switch.

I have my kill switch always turned on because it doesn't reduce my performance. It is just a additional safety measure. CyberGhost has build in kill switch in the software. You can't turn it on or off

cyberghost kill switch As we can see no option for the kill switch

CyberGhost has their own DNS server to prevent DNS leaking. DNS is a network protocol that converts IP adresses to domain name's. DNS leaking is a security flaw that allows a DNS request to be revealed to your ISP DSN servers. Despite using a VPN. That's sounds pretty crazy right?

CyberGhost uses a 256bit encryption on there DNS servers. As we can see in the picture above you can turn the option on/off for forcing data to CyberGhost DNS.

You can test on dns leak test if your VPN is leaking. It is probably a good idiee to test your VPN no mather what all reviews or people say.

Support/Money back guerentee

If you have bought CyberGhost and you are for some reason dissatisfied CyberGhost offers a 45 day money back.
It is very straightfrowarded to cancel your subscription. Log in to your CyberGhost account. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click 'cancel automatic renewal'.
For the refund you need to contact the support team through email or chat. It usually takes a couple of business days to process your refund. You can find here the official money back policy

You can contact CyberGhost by email or a more direct way by chatting with a CyberGhost agent. I tested both methods. With the chat I had a reaction within minutes. Contacting CyberGhost by email took a couple of workdays before I had a answer. The asnwer was in both contact methods clear and helpfull. My preference is the chat because you have your answer the same day. CyberGhost has a FAQ here you can find the most ask questions and the aswers. Before contacting CyberGhost I recommend searching the FAQ through. There is some usefull information in it.
